Established in 2016, the Pacific Southwest Region UTC (PSR) is led by the University of Southern California and includes nine partners: California State University, Long Beach, Northern Arizona University, Pima Community College, University of California, Berkeley, University of California, Davis, University of California, Irvine, University of California, Los Angeles, University of Hawaii, University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The Pacific Southwest Region (PSR) University Transportation Center (UTC) serves Region 9 with a comprehensive, integrated program of research, education and technology transfer built upon the priority needs of the region: 1) closing access gaps, 2) increasing sustainability and resilience of the goods movement system, and 3) expanding workforce opportunities. Region 9 includes Arizona, California, Hawai'i, Nevada, and the Pacific Territories. The region has enormous variation geographically, economically, and socially. It has the second largest metropolitan area in the US (Los Angeles), as well as vast tracts of rural lands. Income disparities are extreme, with concentrations of poverty in central cities as well as remote tribal communities. It includes the center for US maritime trade (the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach) and the inaccessible Pacific islands and territories. We identified five characteristics of Region 9 that frame our research program and inform our research themes. Uneven transportation access across our enormously diverse region, particularly among transportation-disadvantaged travelers and communities Our region’s central role in global supply chains, and the growing risk of disruption to the supply chains Transportation’s central role in sustainability: reducing criteria emissions, meeting ambitious climate goals, and our region’s particular vulnerabilities to climate risks such as wildfires, sea level rise, drought, and extreme weather Our region’s role as the global center of the information and communications technology (ICT) revolution, which is transforming transportation The changing nature of transportation work, potentially placing hundreds of thousands of jobs at risk but creating new jobs as well."},{"date":"5/2/2025","agency":"Department of Transportation","recipient":"UNIVERSITY OF NEW ORLEANS","value":3965180,"savings":2768816.94,"link":null,"description":"The Center for Equitable Transit-Oriented Communities (CETOC) is a U.S. Department of Transportation designated University Transportation Center. It focuses on preserving the environment by promoting transit access, multimodal infrastructure, compact and efficient land use patterns, as well as resilience and climate adaptation. CETOC is a consortium of five universities that consists of renowned transportation researchers and educators from the University of New Orleans, Florida Atlantic University, the University of Colorado, Denver, the University of Florida, and the University of Utah. Florida Atlantic University is the USDOT- designated Minority Serving Institution (MSI) and Hispanic Serving Institution of CETOC. CETOCCENTER FOR EQUITABLE TRANSIT-ORIENTED COMMUNITIES 2 CETOC's Mission is to cultivate transit-centered, equitable, and resilient communities that support residents' multimodal travel needs and preserve the environment. The Center plans to achieve these goals through 1) production of research which will advance scientific knowledge and identify innovations that can inform the planning and development of equitable transit- oriented communities; 2) leadership which will cultivate a diverse group of visionary transportation leaders who will dedicate their careers and inspire others to advance public transportation and build equitable and resilient communities; 3) education and workforce development which will train a new generation of transportation professionals with the knowledge and techniques needed to meet the challenges of the present and be prepared for the future, and 4) technology transfer initiatives which will produce transformative products (e.g., tools, databases, methods, and strategies) to be widely adopted and implemented by the transportation profession for building equitable transit-oriented communities."},{"date":"5/2/2025","agency":"Department of Transportation","recipient":"SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY RESEARCH FOUNDATION","value":3965180,"savings":2989179.22,"link":null,"description":"MCEEST conducts research, education, workforce development, and technology transfer activities to improve mobility of people and goods.
